About this event
On April 15 and 16, we will be attending the AMM 2025 Spring Convention and Trade Show. Chantal Guénette, Director, Ship and Rail Compensation Canada – Rail Fund, will be presenting at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15 with a session entitled “Who Pays? Your Roadmap to Financial Recovery Following a Major Railway Accident Involving Crude Oil.” Participants will walk away with practical steps on how to integrate cost recovery strategies and claims preparedness into their local emergency response plans.
You can also visit our booth at the Trade Show, where you can meet our Policy Analyst, Matt Henrie.
For many municipal, local and Indigenous governments across Manitoba, the regular passage of trains carrying crude oil has become a hallmark of daily life. While generally safe, the transportation of dangerous goods like crude oil can pose risks to communities, the environment, and the economy. The frequency of these shipments highlights the need for municipalities to proactively address these risks. A stark reminder of these risks occurred in St. Lazare, Manitoba, in 2019, when a train derailment resulted in the spill of 820,000 litres of crude oil.
We look forward to meeting local leaders to hear their concerns about rail safety and the necessary compensation if something goes wrong.
