You can now read our 2023-2024 Annual Report here.
As we marked our 35th anniversary, we received a record number of claims. We received them in large part due to our robust and successful outreach program resulting in the Ship Fund becoming increasingly better known across the country.
Here are some key statistics:
Claims processing
- 41 new claims received, totaling $9.2M in damages
- $1.2M paid to Canadian claimants
- 1 out of every 4 claims was generated by abandoned and derelict vessels
Recovery efforts
- $291,145 recovered from polluters in 9 files
- New lawsuits against polluters in about 12 incidents
We also enhanced our preparation for mass compensation in case of a major oil spill by securing an agreement with a major international claims adjuster and manager. The wheels are now set in motion to hold a preparedness exercise.
This year, we have also advanced on key objectives shared by both Funds. To enhance our access to justice goals, we have renamed our Funds as Ship and Rail Compensation Canada, with a brand new website. This will be instrumental in our upcoming outreach efforts.
The progress in 2023-2024 strengthens our belief that the next one will be an even more successful year for the Ship Fund.
