It is with both sadness and gratitude that we announce that Mark A.M. Gauthier will leave his position as Administrator of the Ship and Rail Compensation Canada to enjoy a well-deserved retirement on March 30, 2025.

Mark has dedicated his entire career to the development and enforcement of Canadian and international transportation law. Throughout his tenure, he was not only a highly knowledgeable leader but also a supportive team member. His dedication to fostering collaboration and growth left a lasting impact on his colleagues, stakeholders, partners, and the overall organization.

Here is a message from Mark:

“The appointment as Administrator and my years of service at the Rail Fund have been nothing but a great privilege. Drawing on my experience as Deputy Administrator, I pledged to advance the initiatives started by my predecessor, while also leaving behind a strong and capable organization for my successor. With unwavering support and great dedication from my remarkable team, I am confident in having achieved both aspirations.

During the last two years as Administrator, our entire team has made great progress promoting key initiatives and strengthening our organization. As a result, we signed six agreements with railway companies and an association regarding the transition of claims – a great success that underscores our commitment to ensure a seamless and efficient compensation process for those affected by an accident. Furthermore, we enhanced our working relationship with our external firm for claims management and assessment services. We also improved our accident readiness and legal preparedness, ensuring that we are ready to assist Canadians in their time of need.

The successful launch of Ship and Rail Compensation Canada is an achievement I am most proud of. Looking forward to the future, I am hopeful that this rebranding and our new website will improve awareness of the Rail Fund and access to justice for those affected by major rail accidents involving crude oil.

As I now pass the torch, I want to extend my best wishes to my successor, Caroline Healey. I am confident that she will lead this very qualified team to new heights and hope that she will find as much pleasure in working at the Rail Fund as I did.”
